What is the
meaning of
Straight Bourbon?
First, what is Bourbon?
Well to start out, to clear the air:
"All whiskey is bourbon, but not all bourbon is whiskey.

US Only
Must be distilled and aged in the United States.

This can be anywhere within the US, not just Kentucky or Tennessee. Anywhere.
Proofing
With the distillate coming off the still, it can only be at 160 proof.

It is placed in the barrel with a maximum of 125 proof.
​
It is bottled at a minimum of 80 proof.
​
No additives or colorings are allowed.
Mashbill
The Mashbill must be made of 51% CORN or more. This is one of the TOP 5 things required to be a bourbon.
Aged
It must be aged for at least 2 years in the new charred oak container.
If the bourbon is aged less than 4 years, then an age statement must be declared which reflects the youngest whiskey in the bottle.
New Charred Oak Barrel
It must be stored in a new charred oak container.

It doesn't necessarily need to be a barrel, but because the liquid is a bit heavy for the usual lifting, they chose barrels because they are easy to move by rolling.
Modifications
The only modifications that can be made before bottling takes place is filtration (particulate or chill), adding water (proofing down), batching from barrels of different straight whiskeys from different distilleries all within the same state.
Batching from different states changes it from a straight whiskey to now a Blended Whiskey.
